THE HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL EVENT

28th January 2013 Ambassador Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė  participated in the Holocaust Memorial Day event, upon invitation of the Jewish Police Association (www.jewishpoliceassociation.org.uk ) of the London Metropolitan Police.   

The Chair of the Jewish Police Association, Mathew Shaer, opened the event, gave a snapshot of the association’s activities in promoting multiculturalism and tolerance in the police and the wider society.  The Choir of Hasmonean Primary School performed at the memorial event. Six candles were lit to commemorate the lives, lost more than half a century ago by the Jewish people; the seventh was lit to commemorate other communities affected by the Holocaust.

In his welcoming address, Craig Mackey QPM, Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service, highlighted the importance of remembering the history.  He reemphasised the need for education and elaborated on the role of the Metropolitan Police Service as a whole and the Jewish Police Association in particular in promoting diversity and equality. 

Rabbi Mirvis, Chief Rabbi Elect of the UK, led the memorial prayer and gave a keynote address.  He elaborated on the tragedy of The Holocaust and also focused on the search for true unity and diversity in the UK.  The day was indeed about promoting knowledge and understanding and building bridges between the peoples of different ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds.
