Citizenship of Lithuania
Citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania
Applications for citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania are accepted and examined, and consultations on citizenship matters are provided, by the institution authorized by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania — the Migration Department under the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania.
SUBMISSION OF E-APPLICATION
Applications for citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania, as well as notifications about acquiring citizenship of another state, are submitted only through the Lithuanian Migration Information System MIGRIS at www.migracija.lt (using all browsers except Internet Explorer).
After submitting the application through the MIGRIS system, you will need to present the original documents (which you uploaded with the application) to the Migration Department or to a consular office (the embassy) for verification.
When applying through the embassy, it is necessary to register for an appointment regarding citizenship matters. You can find the registration here.
If you are applying for:
- notification of acquiring citizenship of another state;
- citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania for a child born before 2011-04-01;
- renunciation of citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania;
after submitting your application in the MIGRIS system, you will be able to immediately register for an appointment at the embassy to present the original documents.
The original documents must be submitted within 4 months from the date the documents were uploaded to the system. If the documents are not submitted within the specified period, the person’s application in the MIGRIS system is automatically deleted — in order to continue the process, the application must be submitted again through the MIGRIS system.
Applications for children under 18 years of age must be submitted by one of the parents (the one who will attend the embassy appointment). If the person is already 18 years old on the day the application is submitted at the embassy, then they must personally submit the MIGRIS application. Children under 18 years of age do not need to attend the appointment.
If you are applying for:
- restoration of citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania;
- granting of citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania under the simplified procedure;
- reinstatement of citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania (for a person who acquired Lithuanian citizenship by birth or whose citizenship was restored or granted under the simplified procedure and who later lost it);
- permission to swear allegiance to the Republic of Lithuania;
- issuance or replacement of a certificate confirming the right to restore citizenship;
- issuance or replacement of a certificate confirming Lithuanian origin;
when submitting your application in the MIGRIS system, you must indicate where you will present the original documents. If you choose to submit the original documents at the embassy, the Migration Department will carry out a preliminary assessment of the documents and will send you a notification through MIGRIS informing you that you may register for an appointment at the embassy to present the original documents. The original documents must be submitted within 4 months from the date of the Migration Department’s notification.
IMPORTANT: Once your application has already been forwarded to the Migration Department for examination, and you receive a notification from the Migration Department requesting additional documents, these documents must be submitted directly to the Migration Department: either in person or through an authorized representative, or by post (L. Sapiegos g. 1, LT-10312, Vilnius). Lithuanian diplomatic missions do not act as intermediaries for submitting additional documents related to citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania.
