Replacement of a passport or identity card for persons who have entered into marriage/divorced in a foreign country and wish to change their surname
Documents are accepted only after prior online registration for an appointment.
Applications for registering a marriage/divorce, changing a surname, and issuing a passport or identity card with the new surname can be submitted during the same appointment.
The person submitting the application must be a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania.
There is no need to complete application forms in advance. They will be filled in during the appointment at the embassy.
The issuance or replacement of a passport or identity card when changing a surname after marriage/divorce takes about two months from the date of application.
The old passport or identity card does not need to be left at the embassy.
Required documents:
- Marriage certificate or divorce certificate or court decision on dissolution of marriage, certified with an Apostille by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office Legalisation Office. Information on Apostille certification of documents issued in the United Kingdom can be found here.
- Translation of the marriage/divorce certificate or court decision on dissolution of marriage into Lithuanian (the embassy does not provide translation services and does not verify the accuracy of translations).
- When registering a marriage, valid passports or identity cards of both spouses must be provided.
- When registering a divorce, the applicant’s valid passport or identity card must be provided.
You will be photographed at the embassy. This service is free of charge.

Consular fee for issuance/replacement of a passport or identity card. Payment for consular services at the embassy can only be made by bank card (except American Express).
Collection of documents at the embassy: documents can be collected on weekdays from Monday to Friday, between 9:00 and 15:00. Upon arrival at the embassy, go to the passport reception area and approach an available counter to inform the officer that you have come to collect the passport.
Postal delivery: If you wish to receive the passport by post, provide a Special Delivery envelope prepaid for up to 100 grams (one envelope per document). If you wish to receive an identity card by post, provide 2 Special Delivery envelopes prepaid for up to 100 grams (when certificates are included in the identity card). If certificates are not required, 1 Special Delivery envelope is sufficient. Envelopes must be purchased at the post office.
The embassy is not responsible for any loss of documents during postal delivery.
In all cases when submitting documents for the issuance of a passport or identity card, the consular officer has the right to request that the applicant provide additional documents and/or clarify the submitted data.
