Issuance of the first Republic of Lithuania passport for a child born abroad
This section provides information applicable when the birth of a child born abroad has not yet been registered in Lithuania. If the child’s birth has already been registered in Lithuania, please look for information here.
The person submitting the application to register the child’s birth must be a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania. If the application is submitted by the child’s guardian, a document establishing guardianship must be provided together with the guardian’s passport or identity card.
Documents are accepted only after prior online registration for an appointment.
When registering, you will choose the date and time of the appointment yourself.
A passport or identity card for a child of a Lithuanian citizen born abroad can be issued only after the child’s birth has been registered in Lithuania and a personal identification number has been assigned.
IMPORTANT:
If your child was born after 2011-04-01, the applications for registering the child’s birth and issuing a passport or identity card can be submitted during the same appointment.
If your child was born before 2011-04-01, you must first apply to register the child’s birth in Lithuania (information here). Once the child has been assigned a personal identification number, you must submit an application for Lithuanian citizenship via the MIGRIS system (information here). Only after the child has been granted Lithuanian citizenship can you apply for a passport or identity card.
There is no need to complete application forms in advance; they will be completed during the appointment at the embassy.
When applying for a passport or identity card for a child under 2 years old, the child does not need to be present. Children aged 2 and above must attend the embassy together with the parent. The issuance of a first passport or identity card for a child takes about two months from the date of application.
Required documents:
- Child’s birth certificate listing the child’s parents (Certified Copy of an Entry, if issued in England or Wales; Extract of an Entry in a Register of Births, if issued in Scotland), certified with an Apostille by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office Legalisation Office. Information can be found here.
- Translation of the birth certificate into Lithuanian (the embassy does not provide translation services and does not verify the accuracy of translations).
- Passports or identity cards of both parents. The document of the applicant must be valid.
- Photographs of the child under 2 years of age (photo requirements can be found here). Children aged 2 and above are photographed at the embassy.
- Child’s passport of the United Kingdom or another country (if applicable).
