THE ELGAR CHORALE WILL PERFORM WORKS BY V.MIŠKINIS AND CESAR CUI
21st September - The Elgar Chorale will perform Time is endless by the contemporary Lithuanian composer Vytautas Miškinis (b. 1954) and Bagatelle and Causerie by the composer César Cui (1835-1918) who was born in Vilnius to a French father and a Lithuanian mother. The concert is part of the City of Worcester’s Twinning Association’s 25th Anniversary Week. The music of American, French, English, and German composers will also be presented in the programme . Vytautas Miškinis’s large output of choral works shows great originality and beauty. The organizers have chosen Time is endless, a setting of words by the Bengal polymath Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), written in 2007. It is an excellent example of the composer’s subtle word painting, and there are some beautiful choral nuances. The ending appears inconclusive, as if time is suspended. César Cui’s father was a French army officer who went to Russia with Napoleon’s army in 1812 and settled in Vilnius after its defeat. César was destined for a career in the military and became a noted authority on fortifications. However, he also showed an early talent for music and was able to further his musical ambitions in St Petersburg after graduating from the Nikolaevsky Engineering Academy there. He began to take a more serious interest in music after meeting the Russian composer Mily Balakirev.
