Lithuanian performer Monika Klimaitė debuts at Sadler‘s Wells

A physical theatre piece “Normal Love” will be performed at Lilian Baylis Studio, Sadler's Wells theatre 15 – 17 July. The performance/it will mark an international debut for Lithuanian performer Monika Klimaitė.

Normal Love is a psychological exploration of distorted desires manifested through the sensitivity of physical movement. Inspired by the paintings of Francis Bacon and the artist's interest in body language, performance draws deep on the absurdity of human behaviour, and boldly reveals the mystical emotions hidden behind everyday social masks. Directed by audio-visual artist Zi Ling and a team of award-winning designers - Wang Jing and Tan Hua, Zhao Tong, and a group of Lecoq-trained actors, dancers and musicians – the piece offers a powerful audio-visual experience, filled with elements of spontaneity and surprise.

Monika received her first degree in Directing at Klaipeda University, Lithuania. She also studied physical and post-dramatic theatre forms at Plymouth University, UK, and Eugenio Barba’s workshop at Odin Theatre, Denmark. At the moment, Monika is finishing her MA studies in Performance Practices and Research at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London.

In her work, Monika attempts to combine principles of classical and post-dramatic theatre within theoretical and practical frameworks. Her interest in physical theatre lies in the transformative nature of repetition and the process of becoming an action. 'For me movement is my personal metamorphosis, it is my becoming an action, expression or an abstract idea. For me physical movement is a medium, through which I, as a social persona, can disappear and free my nature, where the time-space-mind-bodily presence-sensuality becomes one.' – says Monika.
