LITHUANIAN FILM "UB LAMA" IN EDINBURGH ETHNOGRAPHIC FILM FESTIVAL
Anthropologic film by Lithuanian director Egle Vertelyte UB Lama will be screened 14 June, 11.45 am at the University of Edinburgh, Chrystal Macmillian building. UB Lama will compete for Basil Wright Film Prize at international Edinburgh’s film festival.
The film tells a story of a problematic 12 year-old Mongolian kid Galbadrakh (Galaa) who tries to survive in a ger (Mongolian tent/house) district by skipping school and selling goods on the black market. However, one day his mother decides that Galaa should try becoming a lama, Buddhist monk. In order to achieve his aim, he needs to study hard, get permission from different high lamas and pass through complicated bureaucracy of the monastery.
By far UB Lamahas won awards in various international festivals and has been recommended for students by American Anthropological Association.Edinburgh’s ethnographic film festival will be held on Thursday 13th - Sunday 16th of June 2013 at the National Museum of Scotland and the Chrystal Macmillian building at Edinburgh University. The festivals aims to explore new trends in visual anthropology, screen recent ethnographic films and promote cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue through ethnographic film.
