LITHUANIAN COMMUNITY ORGANISATIONS GATHERED AT THE EMBASSY

On 19 May, the meeting of the representatives of the Lithuanian community organisations in the UK took place at the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in London. It was a great opportunity for  the guests and participants to learn more about activities undertaken by various organisations.

In his welcoming speech, the Lithuanian ambassador to the UK Dr. Oskaras Jusys noted that it is very useful for the organisations to meet at least once a year in an event like this, where the representatives can exchange their contacts, and thus keep closer relationships and coordinate their activities.

Arvydas Daunoravičius, the director of the Lithuanians Living Abroad department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was pleased with the opportunity to get acquinted with the activities of various organisations. In his speech, Mr. Daunoravičius pointed out that the Lithuanian nation is widely scattered, and therefore it is important for Lithuanians living abroad to have a unifying idea to avoid assimiliation. 

The counselor at the Embassy of Lithuania, Gitana Kilinskaitė, presented the activities of Lithuanian community organisations in the UK and their collaboration projects with the Embassy.

There were many different regions represeneted in the meeting as Lithuanians came from all corners of the UK. Among the attendees there were Mr.L.Madsen, the chairman of Scottish Lithuanian Community, Mr.A.Vilčinskas, the representative of British-Lithuanian Society, Mr.D.Mockus, the president of Lithuanian City of London Club, Ms.Z. Čepaitė, the chairman of Lithuanians Association UK, Ms.O.Jachimovič, the representative of the Lithuanian Chamber of Commerce in the UK, as well as the  representatives from Cambridge, Oxford and Essex universities.

It was the second time when the Embassy of Lithuania invited all to come to the Embassy in order to promote collaboration and communication among the Lithuanian community organisations.

200 thousands of Lithuanian citizens and Lithuanian origin people live in the United Kingdom. A part of them actively participates in social Lithuanian activities and belong to various Lithuanian community organisations, of which there are more than 40. Also, there are more than 30 Lithuanian educational institutions.
