Jewish Heritage of Lithuania in spotlight at 4th Litvak days

On December 1, 2014 the traditional Litvak days in London invited to (re)discover the Jewish heritage of Lithuania. The representatives of the British, Jewish and Lithuanian communities attended the conference at the Lithuanian Embassy in London to learn about the spiritual and material heritage of the Lithuanian Jews.

“The rich Litvak heritage is an integral part of the Lithuanian culture. Consecutive Lithuanian Governments have been putting a lot of effort to preserve and promote the legacy of the Lithuanian Jewry”, the Lithuanian Ambassador Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė noted.

The traditional Litvak days kicked off on Sunday, 30 November, with a screening of the film Ghetto followed by Q/A with the film director A. Juzėnas. It also included the opening of the exhibition „Hello, Paris! The Path of Litvak Artists” at the Lithuanian Embassy in London.  The Lewben Art Foundation exposition presents works by famous Litvak representatives of the École de Paris.

The Litvak days conference was stopped for a minute to present the Life Saving Cross award to Mr Kazys and Ms Vanda Jonaitis (Janavicius) who saved lives of the Lithuanian Jews during the Second World War. On behalf of her father and grandmother the Award was accepted by Ms Gaila Leahy.

The Litvak days in London is an annual event dedicated to the history and culture of the Lithuanian Jews. It serves as a platform to link the British, Jewish and Lithuanian communities.
