Young theatre director Darius Lukas Piraitis looks at the theme of migration
10, 11 October, 2011. Lithuanian theatre “Utopia” in collaboration with Darius Lukas Theatre Company presents a bilingual premiere “Subtitles” at the London Courtyard Theatre, masterminded and directed by Darius Lukas Piraitis. “Subtitles” is a modern day tale about the agony and pleasure of cosmopolitan reality and the price we pay trying to discover ourselves.
Jacob, an up-and-coming writer in London, is about to publish his second book. The publisher asks him to choose aspects of his personal life for a promotional campaign. It does not take long for Jacob to ‘remember’ his real name and origin, his mother-tongue which still haunts him at night and that strangling sense of alienation.
Darius Lukas Piraits, a Lithuanian-born theatre director and writer, is currently studying Theatre Directing at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He also holds a BA (Hons) degree in English Literature and Drama from the University of East Anglia. Darius Lukas has presented his work across Europe and has worked with NT Studio, the Norwich Arts Centre, 19;29 Theatre Company and as an assistant director to both European and English directors. The Darius Lukas Theatre Company, boasting a diverse repertoire, is based at beautiful studios in Fitzroy Square.
David R Butler trained at Sir Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, graduating with a BA (Hons) in Acting. Since then he has performed in several European countries, various independent films and worked alongside some of the industry’s great practitioners Jamie Lloyd, Ben Elton and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Miranda Shrapnell trained at The Arthur Cotterell Theatre in Kingston, graduating with a BA (Hons) in Acting. Since then, she has worked predominantly in theatre, notably with the theatre companies 19;29 and Bum Bum Train in association with the Barbican.
Miglė Polikevičiūtė and Martynas Niedzinskas, trained at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, perform at the National Theatre Lithuania, as well as collaborating with companies around the Continent.
The show “Subtitles” was premiered in Lithuania on 10th/11th September at Arts Printing House, and after few runs in London returns to Lithuania as part of the new playwriting festival “Versmė” at the Lithuanian National Theatre and Kaunas State Drama Theatre.
