Tulips & Roses Gallery and Gintaras Didžiapetris at Frieze
15 - 18 October, 2009. This year Frieze Art Fair introduces an exciting new section. „Frame“ is dedicated to solo artist presentations from young galleries around the world. New gallery from Vilnius Tulips & Roses, less than two years in existence, has been selected for the “Frame” programme and will introduce solo show by the Lithuanian artist Gintaras Didžiapetris (b. 1985) “Konceptas”.
Tulips & Roses about the work: “Memory and meaning are as informed by the forgotten and the absent as they are by all that remains. Gintaras Didžiapetris probes this axiom in his books, sculptures, installations and recordings. In “Konceptas” (2006) he uses a radio broadcaster’s interviews, three photographs and a map drawn from memory to document a small town in central Lithuania: the Konceptas of the title. He fails gloriously, delivering an obviously flawed account: a patchy patchwork. It’s not simply that there is too much missing, it’s that what isn’t there clearly matters most. The artist’s absurd attempt at representation leaves us pondering the very process of signification: sounds require silence; symbols need blank space. Meaning is generated not out of senselessness, but in tandem with it. (GTB)
