Spirit of Baltic Way evoked in London
25 years ago today, people of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia joined their hands to form a human chain spanning over 600 km across Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn.
In this peaceful political demonstration they condemned the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany and demanded freedom for the Baltic States.
Today the spirit of the late 1980’s has been evoked in London as Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian communities gathered at Marble Arch to mark the 25th anniversary of the event.
“We will never forget the sense of unity and determination we felt that day in late August of 1989. I have little doubt that 25 years on our solidarity remains strong and we are as determined to fight for our freedom as we were in 1989. Aggression towards Ukraine reminds us that freedom cannot be taken for granted”, the Lithuanian Ambassador Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė noted.
At 3 PM the Lithuanian, Latvian, Estonian and Ukrainian communities gathered at the Camden Centre. The joint commemorative concert is organised to express the solidarity with the Ukrainians in the face of Russian aggression.
