4 – 11 November 2010. Screen Green! brings together documentaries from 14 European countries that focus on the ever relevant theme of the environment. Among the documentaries that chart the livehoods of isolated communities and their complex relationship to nature is screened also Lithuanian documentary "The River" (2009) by Rimantas and Julija Gruodis, acknowledged the best Lithuanian documentary of the 2009. The film will be screened on the 10th November, 6.30pm, at the cinema theatre of Goethe Institut in London, followed by Latvian and Spanish documentaries.

Still from the documentary by Rimantas and Julija Gruodis "The River"

People of the village of Saleninkai live on the edge of a chemical plant. There was an accident at the plant 20 years ago but several families still live there on polluted ground. There has not been a ferry across the river for a long time, no bus goes to the local town, and the main form of transport for the inhabitants of the village is a boat. They survive by doing odd jobs and living off whatever benefits and pensions they receive. And they not abandon their hopes and dreams.

Screen Green! A Festival of European Documentaries puts commonplace materials and aspects of our everyday life under scrutiny (PLANEAT, Fish n' Pills, Plastic Planet). It sheds light on pollution and the impact of climate change (Green Line – Urban Transport, Pollution, Climate Chaos in the South) and discusses possible solutions (Selective Waste Collection – From Myths to Reality, The 4th Revolution – EnergyAutonomy, Early Learning). French environmentalist, Nicolas Hulot, addresses some of the social and political issues that stand in the way of environmental solutions (One). Most screenings will be accompanied by a Q&A session with the filmmakers.

Screen Green! is a joint project of the EUNIC London cluster (European Union National Institutes for Culture in London), supported by the European Commission Representation in the United Kingdom.
