Samuel Boguslaus Chylinski's Lithuanian Bible - British Library
Tthe Library hosts a panel discussion dedicated to the first printing of the Bible in Lithuanian in London in 1660 and the legacy of Chylinski.
Chylinski was a Lithuanian Protestant scholar who lived and worked in London and Oxford from 1657 until his death in 1666. During his time in England, he translated the Bible into Lithuanian and with financial support of English Protestants, Robert Boyle being one of them, started printing it. Chylinski’s Bible was the second Lithuanian translation of the Bible and the first to be partly printed.
Academics from the UK and Lithuania focus on broader ties between English Protestants and their co-believers on the Continent. Speakers include Professors Robert I. Frost , University of Aberdeen, and Michael Hunter, Birkbeck, University of London, Dr Gina Kavaliunaite-Holvoet, Vilnius University and Dr Gintautas Sliesoriunas, Lithuanian Institute of History.
Samuel Boguslaus Chylinski’s manuscript translation of the New Testament and printed parts of the Old Testament, as well as some other important items related to Lithuania from our collection, will be on display in the Foyle Room, British Library Centre for Conservation from 12.30 till 13.30.
