Portraits. London: an exhibition by young Lithuanian artists
20 February – 16 March, 2009. PureGalery presents three young Lithuanian artists, all studying visual arts at Middlesex University in London – Rokas Darulis, Ernest Zacharevič and Marija Dabrišiūtė. All of them are currently involved with portrait projects, hence the theme of the exhibition installed at the Lithuanian Embassy in London.
Rokas Darulis (b. 1987) is currently finishing his BA Photography course in London. Having travelled the world and changed schools nine times in three different countries over twelve years, Rokas has collected many visual inspirations in his mind, which are reflected in his work. Change is very important in his work and Rokas strives to make his work exceptional and visually striking. His photographs have been published in various Lithuanian magazines, yet the young artist is still only beginning his professional career. Rokas' main subject is people and he concentrates on portraiture and fashion portraits. The presented series is called Smoking Men. We are used to the traditional macho image of smoking men. In his series of portraits Rokas searches for fragility and softness in the smoking men’s faces.
Ernest Zacharevič (b. 1986) graduated from the M.K.Čiurlionis School of Art and is now continuing his studies in London. Traditional and experimental media goes hand in hand in Ernest's work. Old masters influence his work as much as street art and contemporary artists. The nature of his portraits is a collage of fragmented pieces of reality rather than a statement.
Marija Dabrišiūtė (b. 1986) has studied arts in the Martinaitis School of Art, Kaunas Art Gymnasium and National M.K.Čiurlionis School of Art, and now continues her studies at the London Middlesex University. Alongside fine art, she also maintains an interest in theatre. During her studies in London Marija has shifted to time based media and is now concentrating on video installations. She is also interested in political and environmental art.
