Photographer Ieva Austinskaitė - shortlisted for the Signature Art Prize 2015

The photographer Ieva Austinskaitė is among the artists shortlisted for the Signature Art Prize 2015 in the Photography category. This one-of-a-kind UK-based international contest aims to promote the work of artists who are in the very early stages of their careers. It only accepts submissions from creators who have either graduated within the last three years or are still studying. The prize champions their unique perspective and signature themes.

The contest has also received submissions from outside the United Kingdom – Poland, Croatia, and the USA. The works of the selected finalists will be exhibited during the gala event on the 19th of March, during which the judges will see the works on display for the first time and a winner from each category will be chosen. The winning works will be displayed for one more month, while their authors will be awarded £1000 cash and representation by DegreeArt.com, among other prizes.

Born in 1992, I. Austinskaitė went to Kaunas High School of Arts. In 2014, she successfully completed a BA degree in photography at the Middlesex University in London, making it to the Dean’s list and receiving an award for an outstanding achievement. Besides, in 2010, she won a photography contest “Debiutas” and has previously displayed her work in various exhibitions both in Lithuania and the United Kingdom.

The artist’s submission for the contest, a photography project called “Passengers”, features portraits taken on public transport and aims to capture solitude. The photographs reflect both the individual stories of their subjects and the general tendencies of life in the city – apathy, exhaustion, anonymity, alienation and detachment. According to the photographer herself, “Public transport is a place where people get carried away with their own matters and create their own tiny private space in a public space”.

I. Austinskaitė is currently working on documentary, conceptual and street photography projects.
