“ONCE UPON A TIME” – AMBASSADOR OPENED AN EXHIBITION IN GATESHEAD
On 30th May 2013 Ambassador of Lithuania Mrs. Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė opened an exhibition at the Shipley Art Gallery in Gateshead. The exposition included paintings, watercolours and prints by the British artist Naomi Alexander, who has roots in Lithuania. The exhibition of works entitled ‘Once Upon a Time in Lithuania’ was the result of a number of visits to Lithuania where the artist went to discover more about her family’s past.
Ambassador paid a particular attention to the specialised programmes designed to preserve, cultivate and strengthen the Litvak heritage of Lithuania. “Such events – are living statements of our tragic past. However, they also provide an excellent opportunity to teach younger generations about the history and the rich and vibrant Lithuanian Jewish heritage”. Ambassador further spoke about the forthcoming Lithuanian Presidency of the EU and briefly outlined the steps taken by the Lithuanian government to promote integration. “Our multicultural heritage and rich history of driving change in the continent compels us to seek tolerance, respect and unequivocal European values, ensuring the past had provided enough lessons for nurturing values of present day Lithuanians”, concluded Lithuanian Ambassador.
