Official visit by the President of Lithuania H.E. Valdas Adamkus to London
On February 13-15 the President of the Republic of Lithuania H.E. Valdas Adamkus paid an official visit to the United Kingdom.
President V.Adamkus met with Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Foreign Secretary David Miliband for bilateral talks. At the meetings in Downing Street and Foreign and Commonwealth Office regional and EU issues as well as Afghanistan were discussed.
On Thursday, 14 February, the President met with Lord Mayor of City of London David Lewis at the Mansion House. Minister of Finance Rimantas Sadzius, Deputy Minister for Economy Vytautas Nauduzas and delegation representing Lithuanian banking and financial sector met with their British counterparts and discussed investment opportunities in Lithuania.
On Thursday, 14 February, at London School of Economics (LSE) President V.Adamkus delivered a lecture „Completing Europe: Integration with Neighbours and Engagement with Russia“. Full text of the President‘s speech may be found here ( 47.0 kb ) .
President has also met with the members of the UK Parliament, co-chairmen of All-Party Parliamentary Group for cooperation with Lithuania Roger Berry (Labour) and Lord Bowness (Conservative).
The 90th Anniversary of the proclamation of Independence of the Republic of Lithuania (16 February 1918) was celebrated with representatives of the Lithuanian community in the UK, representatives of British Parliament and government. For the outstanding personal contribution in promoting principles of democracy, free market and developing the bilateral UK-Lithuania dialogue President V.Adamkus presented Lady Thatcher with Grand Cross of Vytautas the Great Order.
On Friday, 15 February, President V.Adamkus was received by Her Majesty the Queen at the Buckingham Palace.
