Newham Met Police and the Lithuanian Community celebrate sports day together

On 24 January, 2015 Newham Met Police in collaboration with the Embassy of Lithuania invited to a Sports day hosted by the University of East London. The event aimed at promoting the cooperation between Newham local authorities and the Lithuanian Community. It produced some quality performances from four participating teams which competed in two competitions. Along with football, the players were encouraged to play basketball, the most popular sport in Lithuania.

“It was the initiative of the (Newham) Metropolitan Police to organise this event. When I was first introduced to the idea of a joint sports day event I thought that it presented a unique opportunity for local Lithuanians to get closer to the people who look after them every day. I am happy that we have achieved our goals. I believe that today we have contributed to building a stronger, more open and safer Newham. I trust that the hard-working and vibrant Lithuanian Community will become a real asset to your Borough”, the Lithuanian Ambassador Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė said.

Beside sporting events, the sports day included a much anticipated performance of the Metropolitan Police dog unit which was followed by traditional Lithuanian dances performed by Lithuanian folk group Saduto. Children enjoyed a jumping castle and face painting while all the participants were presented with the opportunity to taste traditional British and Lithuanian food.
