New Europe Film Festival celebrates Ladislas Starewitch
19 April, 2009. This year’s New Europe Film Festival will celebrate a great Lithuanian artist, Ladislas Starewitch. Rasa Miškinytė’s documentary on the legendary animator, The Bug Trainer will be screened at the Filmhouse in Edinburgh on the 19th April at 4 pm. The film will be accompanied by the Oscar-winning animation Peter and the Wolf.
Ladislas Starewitch (1882 – 1965), European Disney, a pioneer of puppet animation is one of the most forgotten film geniuses. He was named as a true Wizard and an Alchemist of animation, whose wizardry was born in Lithuania; he got his fame in Russia and flourished in his full power in France. This film will be an effort to “decode” Starewitch by using the means of his own artistic thinking, and tiding together the biographical facts, memoirs, factual information, films made by Starewtich himself driven by the love story of puppets.

New Europe is a term used for the twelve new members of the European Union that joined the Community in May 2004 and January 2007. New Europe Film Festival has been bringing the films from the new EU member states to the Edinburgh Filmhouse cinema since 2007. This year, for the first time, the festival will also show part of the programme in the Barbican in London. The organisers hope that this annual event will help the local UK audience and the immigrants from Eastern and Central Europe to establish a dialogue about their life in the enlarged Europe. This year’s films come from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Estonia, Hungary, Poland and Romania.
The films are presented in collaboration between the cultural institutes and embassies, Edinburgh Filmhouse and Barbican Centre.
