Synopsis
Vitas Luckus was an extremely colourful bird standing out from drabness the Soviet era. He was the first to go beyond Lithuanian surroundings and document the spontaneous reality of Soviet Republics. From the 1960s to the mid-1980s, he traveled throughout the Soviet bloc, capturing peasants, performers, partiers and policemen, as well as a generation of grippingly attractive young artists. The secret police were a constant presence in his life, burgling his home and beating him in bathrooms and cafes. He lived in Vilnius with his beautiful wife Tatyana who was his muse and his creative partner, alternately his subject and his co-producer. They were the vibrant couple of the ‘60s and their home was always full of people, wine, nightlong conversations and guests from the farthermost places of the Soviet Union. Vitas Luckus was known for his surreal and conceptual photography, and is considered by many to be the founder of these schools of photography in Lithuania.
The event was supported by Lithuanian Culture Attache in the United Kingdom Juste Kostikovaite and partially supported by Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania.
