MAPPING MUSIC - INTERNATIONAL YOUNG COMPOSERS EVENT

Mapping Music is a programme of new works by composers from the LSO Soundhub scheme and the Royal Academy of Music complemented by music of Jonathan Harvey, Simon Steen-Andersen and Helmut Lachenmann. The programme is linked by sets of free improvisation.

Mapping Music is a joint effort of two British and two Baltic composers, who all met in London and wanted to bring to life a project that features some of the music they like by composers they respect. The initial idea of the concert was brought by Estonian composer Elo Masing and British composer Richard Bullen. They invited their colleagues, whose music they appreciate, to join the project. During the concert the audience will hear a new piece ‘Imagination’ for 6 violins in space by Lithuanian composer Ruta Vitkauskaite, dedicated to the memory of British composer Jonathan Harvey, who died in late 2012. ‘Me and Elo study together at the Royal Academy of Music and live close to each other so we meet quite often. This concert is her idea and I am happy that she and R. Bullen invited me to join it,’ says R. Vitkauskaite.

The pieces of the concert will be performed in micro and macro space, exploring 'uncharted' areas on the instruments as well as the entire performance space. That’s how R. Vitkauskaite explains the space idea. ‘For all of the composers of this event spaces are extremely important. My and R. Bullen’s pieces require larger space. On the contrary, E. Masing’s pieces are best enjoyed in a smaller space. That’s how the contrast is born’.
