LONDON FRIEZE WEEK 2017: Lina Lapelyte performs in KOKO and KUNSTRAUM

David Roberts Art Foundation (DRAF) is an independent, non-profit organisation for contemporary art. One of London’s best-known non-profit art spaces, presents an Evening of Performances and 10th Anniversary Party. The event takes place on Tuesday, 3 October (during Frieze London week) at historic music venue KOKO. The evening opens with Lithuanian artist Lina Lapelyte’s ‘Ladies’. In this act, four musicians – Violeta Aukštkalnytė, Nijolė Plavinskaitė, Danutė Mikalauskienė and Judita Kondrotienė will perform a mesmeric multi-layered composition on traditional Lithuanian string instruments, known as kanklės.

The women are members of the national song and dance ensemble ‘Lietuva’, a folkloristic orchestra that toured worldwide during the Soviet regime. Other artists in the programme include Marvin Gaye Chetwynd with MEGA HAMMER, Last Yearz Interesting Negro aka Jamila Johnson-Small, Nkisi, Turner prize-winner Laure Prouvost with TRIM, Hannah Quinlan and Rosie Hastings, and much more.

Lina Lapelyte is an artist living and working in London and Vilnius. Her performance-based practice is rooted in music and flirts with pop culture, gender stereotypes, aging and nostalgia. Lapelyte explores contemporary forms of performativity that are related to rituals of folk, popular music and opera. Her works are fueled by expression, marked by pastiche and grotesque, contextual and conceptual musicality, theatrical suggestibility, stylised visuality. In Autumn 2017 she will have a solo show at Rupert, Vilnius as well the performance night at the FIAC, Paris. Her new collaborative opera Sun and Sea will be shown at the National Gallery in Vilnius and Dresden State theatre.

On Saturday 7 October, Lina Lapelytė will perform at the Kunstraum gallery five-year birthday party,  featuring appearances and works by Steev Lemercier, Fay Nicholson, Alex Cecchetti and others.

Partner: Lithuanian Cultural Institute. The work “Ladies” was commissioned by Rupert in partnership with The Living Art Museum and Oslo National Academy of Arts as a part of “Double Bind" programme  and produced under the EEA funding program and Lithuanian Republic in 2015.
