Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister Skusevičius attends the Nordic-Baltic-UK Foreign Ministers’ meeting

On 4 September in London, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania attended the Nordic-Baltic (NB8) and the UK Foreign Ministers’ meeting to discuss important security issues related to transatlantic ties, security in the region, the situation in North Korea and the Middle East, and the future of relations between the United States and Europe. Much attention was dedicated to the large-scale Russian 2017 Zapad military exercises in Belarus. The Foreign Ministers also considered options to ensure a more coordinated response to strategic challenges and hybrid threats.

The NB8 countries and the UK share a similar approach to transatlantic cooperation, security threats and support for the Eastern neighbours. The meeting, therefore, aimed at strengthening a dialogue on foreign policy issues and discussed possibilities for closer cooperation.

“Our principled positions on threats facing Europe are completely in line. The deployment of British troops in the Baltic states is a great proof that we will continue to jointly tackle the security challenges facing our region,” said Skusevičius.

The meeting also discussed the Eastern Partnership policy and the upcoming Summit in Brussels. “Citizens of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia travelling without visas is, clearly, an achievement for all and provides a strong motivation for the citizens of these countries for choosing the path to European integration,” said Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister.

Since 2011, the NB8 countries have been actively cooperating with the UK in preparing the Northern Future Forum.
