Lithuania’s Basketball Legend at the 5th European Documentary Festival in London

21 February, 2012. A film about Lithuania's greatest basketball player of all times Arvydas Sabonis is part of the 5th European Documentary Festival “Ready Steady Doc!”, this year dedicated to films about sport. “Sabas” by Vytautas V. Landsbergis is a sports and family portrait of the great sportsman (nickname Sabas), full of the most important moments from the history of basketball in Lithuania, beginning with the European championships of 1938.

The legendary sports professional talks about the unforgettable Žalgiris-CSKA (Central Sports Club of the Army) matches in which the Lithuanians three times in a row in 1985,1986 and 1987 defeated the CSKA which one could with some justification call the Soviet team, the Olympic games in Seoul, Barcelona and Atlanta, as well as the European championships. The viewer will also be given the opportunity to see the impressive performance of this giant of basketball in the championships in Spain and the NBA league.

It is a film not just about basketball but about Lithuania’s second religion – as basketball is sometimes called.

Ready Steady Doc! is a joint project of EUNIC London (European Union National Institutes for Culture), supported by the European Commission Representation in the UK.

21 February, Tuesday, 8pm, Lithuanian Embassy in London, 2 Bessborough Gardens, SW1V 2JE. Free entrance, but registration is necessary events@uk.mfa.lt or tel. 020 7592 2841
