Lithuanians in the UK celebrate Restoration day of Lithuania‘s Independence
March 13th, 2017. Last weekend Lithuanians in the UK celebrated the Restoration day of Lithuania‘s Independence. The celebrations included a series of commemorative events held across the country.
On March 11th and 12th concerts of classical music performed by Lithuanian opera soloists Romanas Kudriašovas and Lina Dambrauskaitė were held at Rochester’s Cathedral and London St Casimir's Lithuanian Church.
On March 12th Nottingham Lithuanians hsoted a discussion with the senior editor of the Economist Edward Lucas. It followed a religious service held at the Cathedral Church of St. Barnabas.
Earlier in the week a dedicated exhibition to mark the 27th Anniversary of Restoration of Lithuania’s Independence was opened at the Lithuanian Embassy in London. ‘Vilnius.Topophilia’ exhibition showcase poetical and vivacious images of Vilnius. It includes pieces by famous 20th century Vilnian painters.
The Independence of Lithuania was restored on March 11th 1990. The Act of the Re-Establishment of Independence of Lithuania reiterated the legal continuity of interwar Lithuania which was occupied and illegally annexed by the USSR in June 1940.
