LITHUANIAN PRESIDENCY OF THE EU PROGRAMME PRESENTED IN BELFAST

On 26 September 2013 the Ambassador of Lithuania to the UK Mrs Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė and her delegation visited Belfast. The programme of the visit included meetings with leaders of the Northern Ireland Assembly, the First Minister the Rt Hon Peter Robinson MLA and Deputy First Minister Mr Martin McGuinness, culture and business representatives. „The visit strengthened trade and economic links with Lithuania, showed my country’s support of the peace process in Northern Ireland and reintroduced our partners in Northern Ireland with modern, creative and open Lithuania“, said the Ambassador. 

The priorities of the Lithuanian EU Presidency were outlined during the visit.  Lithuania, as the first among the Baltic countries to assume the EU Presidency which will continue to the end of 2013.  Driving the time of complex economic reforms, the agenda of the Lithuanian Presidency focuses on strengthening of credible, growing and open Europe.  Financial stability, the banking union, unemployment, creation of new jobs, common energy market and relations with Southern and Eastern neighbours – just some of the main areas of concern during the Presidency.
