LITHUANIAN PM MEETS BRITISH PREMIER

  In the afternoon of 12 June, Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas arrived in London where he met with the UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. During the meeting, the prime ministers discussed matters relating to international missions. Tony Blair gave a very good assessment of Lithuania’s contribution to international security and the fight against international terrorism. Discussing EU-Russia relations, Prime Minister Kirkilas and Prime Minister Blair expressed their concern at the deteriorating situation regarding democracy in Russia. The Head of the Lithuanian Government drew attention to supply interruptions to the Mažeikių nafta oil refinery, pointing out that the interruptions diminish trust in Russia. Prime Minister Kirkilas informed his counterpart about the upcoming summit scheduled for autumn in Lithuania and invited the Head of the UK Government to be a keynote presenter at the forum.

Both prime ministers agreed to honour the EU commitment to fight global warming and reduce atmospheric CO2 levels. Gediminas Kirkilas assured Mr Blair that a new nuclear power plant in Lithuania would contribute to reducing the greenhouse effect.

During the meeting, the British Prime Minister Tony Blair shared his impressions of the G8 summit held in Germany last week. The prime ministers also discussed the upcoming summit in Brussels and the future deliberations on the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe.
