Benas Šarka and his Theatre of Gliukai (based in Klaipėda) is one of the few examples of non-institutional theatre, that exists on the margins of the Lithuanian theatre tradition. It can be called the extension of the tradition of physical theatre of the avant-garde, where the real body of the actor performs actions “here and now” in front of the eyes of spectators. At first glance it reminds the performance art practices.
The audience is able to closely observe the bodily tension, fragility, vulnerability of the actor's body, and to enter the dangerous zone of theatrical risk him-/herself. Self-manifesting close corporeality, performative and figurative transformations form the basis of Benas Šarka theatre, where spectator is confronted with the deconstruction of the traditional notion of “character”, as the identity of actor is melted into different roles, constructed and deconstructed in the eyes of spectator.
His performance "Throughout" is a return to the pre-theatre times, to the ritual of words, body, soul and prehistoric myths.
The photography exhibition "No Limits, No Control" runs from Friday 20th May to Sunday 22nd May and is open from 10am to 6pm.
