Lithuanian artists in prestigious music festivals around the UK

In July, there has been an increasing number of events in the UK featuring talented Lithuanian artists. Some of the most significant was Viktorija Gečytė’s performance at the Birmingham Solihull & Sandwell Jazz Festival as well as Martynas Levickis’ upcoming show at Petworth festival.

On 17-20 July, singer Viktorija Gečytė renewed her partnership with Gene Perla who has in his time worked with singers such as Sarah Vaughan and Nina Simone. Together they performed some of the jazz classics as well as some of Viktorija’s original pieces from her latest albums.

Another talented Lithuanian to see in Birmingham is the brilliant conductor of City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra – Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla. The CBSO Chorus in Birmingham, trained by Simon Halsey, is a symphonic choir made up of “amateur professionals” and is the flagship of musical life in Birmingham.

On 29 July, don’t miss a sizzling musical finale to the 39th Petworth Festival as the extraordinary virtuoso that is the Lithuanian classical accordionist Martynas Levickis is joined by four equally exciting fellow countrymen, from the Mikroorkéstra Ensemble. They present a dynamic programme centered on the timeless ‘Tango Nuevo’ of renowned Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla. If ever a programme was designed to bring a festival to a fitting finale this carefully compiled sequence of popular classical, tango and folk music is certainly it.
