Lithuanian armed forces day celebrated in London
23.11.2016. The Lithuanian Embassy in London invited British politicians and military personnel as well as foreign diplomats and representatives of the UK Lithuanian community to celebrate the Lithuanian armed forces day. The guest of honor of the event was the Foreign Minister of Lithuania Mr Linas Linkevičius. The reception at the Embassy presented a good opportunity to underscore close cooperation between Lithuanian and HM armed forces.
“Both countries share same values and similar aspirations for peace and prosperity. Lithuania and the UK are key NATO allies working closely to ensure that the challenges of today are met and the Alliance grows from strength to strength” the Lithuanian Ambassador Asta Skaisgirytė said.
Lithuania and the UK have enjoyed close military cooperation in recent years. Lithuania along with other partner states has joined the UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), both countries will be taking part in the NATO Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF) in 2017. The UK troops regularly exercise in Lithuania and the Baltic region, the RAF Typhoons have participated in four NATO Air policing missions since 2004. In 2017 the UK will assume the responsibility as a NATO enhance forward presence framework nation in the Baltics.
On 23 November 1918 the Prime Minister of Lithuania Augustinas Voldemaras signed the decree No. 1 giving legal basis for formation of the Armed Forces of Lithuania.
