Great battles of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania remembered at the embassy

On February 27, 2014 more than fifty people of different backgrounds but with the same passion for history gathered at the Lithuanian Embassy in London to learn about the great battles of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL).

The discussion organized in cooperation with the British-Lithuanian Society presented a unique opportunity to listen to distinguished historians, Prof. Robert Frost (the University of Aberdeen), Dr. Darius Staliūnas (the Lithuanian Institute of History), Prof. Richard Butterwick-Pawlikowski (UCL-SSEES), who specialize in the military history.

“Over my years in diplomatic service I have realized that very little is known about the medieval Lithuania.  The discussion that took place today is s a good opportunity to introduce the Grand Duchy of Lithuania to our British friends and colleagues”, the Ambassador Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė noted.

Founded in the 12th century the Grand Duchy of Lithuania soon became the largest state in Europe. From the 16th century in the union with Poland, it would be renowned for its multi-ethnic and multi-confessional diversity. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth ceased to exist as an independent entity in 1795.
