Frieze Week: Tulips & Roses at the Sunday Art Fair

13-16 October, 2011. Tulips & Roses at the Sunday art fair this year introduces curator and artist Raimundas Malašauskas. For the fair he is making a new hologram with real actors inside reenacting a theater play from 1984.

Raimundas Malašauskas got curious about holography because it was a scientific technology which never really got distinguished from speculations and pipe dreams and because it had some very compelling features: a hologram nowadays is in fact video recording lasting several seconds and the viewer activates it in a kind of corporeal montage when walking around the hologram’s surface. So it’s something that is time-based, but also something that exists in space. Or rather: it is an inextricable mixture of temporal and spatial qualities molded into actual perception.

Raimundas Malašauskas about his new hologram: “There is a composite character at the source - composed of several actors. The further I was looking into it, the more complex it became. You could see my eyes where your legs were, tongue - where the brain was, detail - cut across the whole, background - in the midst of everything, head - enmeshed in someone else's thinking, logic - cast in dust, flight - spiraling in neuromuscular energy of yesterday's party, the party - in triplication of parts, synergy - in dead metaphors, illusion - in proximity of the beginning. All entangled in time and space through non-local connections, so that a finger in the back of the time belonged to a button of tomorrow, but also - to the eye of the viewer that held it together. The more I was looking at it the more I was becoming it.”
