Frieze Week: Jonas Mekas at the Serpentine Gallery Garden Marathon
15-16 October, 2011. The Serpentine Gallery Garden Marathon is the sixth in the Gallery’s acclaimed Marathon series. This two-day event is an exploration of the concept of the garden, and Jonas Mekas together with the artist and activist David Ellis will highlight Orvidas Garden in Lithuania – unique place where man-made and natural, order and disorder, faith and stone – all comes together. The garden can offer productive metaphors for the interactions between human life and time, care, thought or space.
From Jonas Mekas letter to David Ellis: “Before I was trying to understand it only in terms of modern environmental sculpture. But you connected it to architecture. And very rightly so! I think that Orvidas garden is as much a piece of architecture as is Gaudi’s unfinished Barcelona cathedral. Both are architecture works and both are dedicated to the Sacred. And both are equally magnificent. […] I can not think of anything else to compare it with. The only difference here is that while at Gaudi’s unfinished cathedral I felt yes, it is unfinished, but Barcelonians are doing everything they can to somehow complete it, some day, while here at Orvidas Garden, I was aware of continuous destruction of this incredible Cathedral, due to the Lithuanian Government’s and the artistic community’s great and almost total unappreciation of the greatness of this work. Wake up, Lithuania, wake up, artists and architects of Lithuania, and protect, and be proud of one of great architectural and sculptural works of this century.”
