EXPERTS DISCUSSED EU ENERGY SECURITY IN LONDON
On 15th November 2013, the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in cooperation with the Royal Institute of International Affairs “Chatham House” organised a conference “Options for the Development of a Secure and Sustainable Energy Sector in the European Union”.
“The event is timely and is of uttermost importance to us Europeans”, said the Ambassador of Lithuania Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė. „One of the priorities of the Lithuanian EU Presidency is the energy security and the completion of the ambitious EU Internal Energy Market”.
Participants of the conference discussed the issues related to the climate change policy, the nuclear sector, the renewable energy and an external dimension of the EU Energy security. “Balancing of these is a hugely complex and often politicised challenge and it will only be achieved by having transparent and open dialogues which strive towards generating common understandings” in her welcome speech commented the Lithuanian Ambassador.
The EU’s energy security agenda and the Lithuanian EU Presidency priorities in this area were presented by Paul Hodson – Head of Unit of Energy Efficiency, European Commission and Žygimantas Vaičiūnas – Adviser to the Minister of Energy of Lithuania. The EU energy future was discussed by a diverse group of panellists including Michael Grubb – University of Cambridge, Ofgem, & Specialist Advisor to the House of Lords, Ian Simm – Impax Asset Management, Simon Skillings – E3G, and Romas Švedas – Independent Energy Security Expert and Former Deputy Minister for Energy of Lithuania.
