EVENING OF LITHUANIAN LITERATURE

To celebrate Lithuania's Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the European Commission Representation in the UK, the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania are holding an evening of Lithuanian Literature, featuring readings in English and Lithuanian from a new anthology of Lithuanian Literature – the Dedalus Book of Lithuanian Literature – available for the first time in English. The anthology's editor, Almantas Samalavičius, will also give a talk in English introducing Lithuania's writers to the uninitiated, showing how the country's writers have reflected Lithuania's development from an agrarian Catholic society and its ability to survive the worst ideologies of the twentieth century. The readings will be given by the actress Živilė Šlekytė-Roche. The talk and readings will be followed by a reception, with music from Lithuanian guitarist Tomas Čiučelis. Monday 18 November at 6.45 pm, Europe House, 32 Smith Square, London SW1P 3EU The event is free but please register by Friday 15 November by e-mailing agnieszka.piela@ext.ec.europa.eu putting "Lithuanian Literature" in the subject field.
