Evelina Puzaitė opens her 2009 concert season at the prestigious Wigmore Hall in London

4 January, 2009. Following the New Year’s festivities, the Wigmore Hall hosts a recital of one of the most promising young talents from the Baltic States – the pianist Evelina Puzaitė. On Sunday, 4 January, her recital, presented by the Kirckman Concert Society, will feature a vivid programme including pieces by Schumann, Prokofiev, Debussy and Kodály.

Lithuanian-born pianist Evelina Puzaitė is known as a performer of natural sensitivity, delicacy of performance and strong charisma. Having won numerous International Piano Competitions and a long term contract with Landor Records, Evelina Puzaitė is now a regular performer at such concert venues as the Wigmore Hall, the Barbican, and the Southbank Centre.

Puzaitė’s exceptional musicality was noticed early on at the National School of Arts in Lithuania, and in 2001 she was awarded the prestigious Baltic State Scholarship to study with the distinguished Professor Joan Havill at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where she is now an Artist Fellow.

Evelina is a recipient of numerous awards, including the Philharmonia Orchestra/Martin Musical Scholarship Fund Award, which led to her recital debut at the Royal Festival Hall; and First Prize at both the Rubinstein Piano Competition in Paris and the Tel-Hai International Piano Competition in Israel. Evelina has performed extensively throughout Europe and the USA; her debut recording Moments Musicaux on Landor Records was released to great critical acclaim in 2007.

On 4th January 2009, the young pianist will perform her third solo recital at the Wigmore Hall. “It is a great honour to play at such a distinguished venue”, says Evelina Puzaitė. “This hall has ideal acoustics for a piano performance, and the atmosphere of each of my recitals there has been unique.”

The Wigmore Hall is today one the world’s most important recital venues, presenting around 400 events each year including song, early music, chamber music and recitals. Originally named the Bechstein Hall, it was built between 1899 and 1901. The hall is considered to have one of the best acoustics for classical music in Europe.

For this Wigmore Hall recital, Evelina Puzaitė has chosen a diverse programme. The first part will present a juxtaposition of two of her favorite composers – Robert Schumann and Sergei Prokofiev – featuring two early opuses of each composer: Piano Sonata No. 2 in G minor by Schumann, and Piano Sonata No. 2 in D minor by Prokofiev. The second part of her recital will transport listeners to the colourful world of modal harmony: Evelina will perform Debussy’s complete series of Images, and Kodály’s Dances of Marosszék.

The concert will start at 7:30 pm.
