EU COMPETITIVENESS DISCUSSED WITH EU AMBASSADORS IN LONDON
On 4th November 2013 the Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė hosted the EU Ambassadors meeting with The Rt Hon Vince Cable, UK Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills and the President of the Board of Trade. The event was organised during the Lithuanian Presidency of the EU to discuss the priorities of the EU Competitiveness Council.
In her welcome speech, the Ambassador reiterated, that the competitiveness is the cornerstone of the EU economic reconstruction, aimed at the long term recovery and growth. "The Lithuanian EU Presidency focuses on and pays a great deal of attention to the competitiveness issues, essentially the major contributing factor in achieving growth in Europe. This is one of our Presidency's main priorities," said the Ambassador.
The Rt Hon Vince Cable elaborated on the current UK - EU membership debate and expressed his support by citing examples of the EU membership benefits to the households, small and large businesses and the country as a whole. “I do acknowledge that 60% of City-based firms are in London because of the single market, and that is important to defend because of Britain’s ability to influence its rules”, said the Secretary of State.
