EMBASSY’S STATEMENT ABOUT THE BEAUTY CONTEST

The Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania firmly objects to the name of “LITHUANIA” being used in the context of MISS USSR UK competition, organised by a private enterprise Julia Boo Parties.

We have received number of complaints from our nationals in the UK via emails, telephone calls and our social media network, expressing strong feelings of discontent directed at the organisers for misinterpreting historical facts related to the Soviet occupation of the Republic of Lithuania. It is also noteworthy, that the British Government never accepted the forced incorporation of Lithuania into the USSR.  We therefore believe that inviting Lithuanian girls to participate in the beauty pageant named after the Soviet Union is an anathema.

In view of this, the Embassy requests the organisers to take the name of Lithuania from the competition literature, including website http://www.missussr.co.uk

The Embassy understands that the beauty competition was initiated to facilitate mutual understanding, respect and appreciation of the multiculturalism.  It is sad to note, that the organisers gave an inappropriate political and historical context to this beauty contest.
