EMBASSIES TEAM UP TOGETHER TO PROMOTE BASKETBALL
Today, 4th September 2013 Ambassadors of Lithuania and Slovenia welcomed basketball enthusiasts at the joint celebration of the European Basketball Championship, where teams from 24 European countries, including Team GB, competing between 4th and 22nd September 2013 in Slovenia.
Lithuania is holding the Presidency of the EU and Slovenia is the host nation of the Championship. In the European spirit of good neighbourly relations and to celebrate our common passion for basketball the Embassies have teamed up together to host a celebratory get-together. Basketball enthusiasts, including representatives of the British, Slovenian and Lithuanian basketball clubs, youth associations and charities were invited to take part.
“We are glad to host the event organised during the Presidency of the EU. I hope it will provide yet another avenue for people of sport to network, re-establish contacts and talk about future projects”, said Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė, the Ambassador of Lithuania in her welcoming speech. Basketball enthusiast Ambassador of Slovenia Iztok Jarc welcomed participants by saying “My country is very much like Lithuania when it comes to basketball. The European Basketball Championship has just begun in Slovenia and I invite you to take advantage of tonight’s event in exploring possibilities to work together in promoting basketball”.
