Deimantas Narkevičius at the Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival 2015

23-27 September 2015 Deimantas Narkevičius will be participating in the Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival. The Lithuanian artist will co-lead a seminar and present his films. On Sunday 27 September Narkevičius's film Once in the XX Century will be screened at the Festival. The film questions and reinterprets the historical and political memory of the breakup of the Soviet Union. The movie will be followed by a retrospective screening of the artist's film works followed by a Q&A session. Narkevičius’s film The Dud Effect will also accompany a screening of Peter Watkins's The War Game on Saturday 26 September. Narkevičius will also be featured at a three-day-long seminar based on the main theme of the Festival - Fact or Fiction.

The Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival is an international festival of the art of film, which eliminates the boundaries between art and cinema and creates a new forum for debate. The festival, set in the historic border town of Berwick-upon-Tweed and using the town’s unique architecture as a platform, has established a singular reputation for ambitious programming that includes film premieres, moving image installations and live performances.

Deimantas Narkevičius is one of the most consistent and widely recognized Lithuanian artists on the international art scene. Originally trained as a sculptor, Deimantas Narkevičius began working with film in the early 1990s. His films examine the relationship between personal memory and political history, particularly in relation to the profound social changes experienced in Eastern Europe. He represented his country at the 49th Venice Biennale in 2001 and at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003 in Utopia Station, curated by Molly Nesbit and Hans Ulrich Obrist. Since 1992 he has exhibited extensively around the world in group shows at many significant contemporary art venues and events. He showed at Manifesta II in Luxemburg in 1998 and has exhibited in London, Paris, Brussels, Vilnius, Manchester, Dublin, Vienna, Brussels, Helsinki, Stockholm, Zurich, Rotterdam, Melbourne, and many other cities. Solo shows include Either true or fictitious, at FRAC Pays de la Loire in France in 2003 and The Deimantas Narkevicius Project at the Münchner Kunstverein, Munich in 2002.
