Culture Jam, a 12 hour marathon of events in Birmingham and London

13-14 November, 2009. English and British artists will collaborate for two evenings of music, art, photography and short films, exploring the lives of Lithuanians living in Birmingham and London today. The aim of Culture Jam, co-ordinated by the British Lithuanian Youth Association, is to highlight the common threads in Lithuanian and British lives; celebrate Lithuanian culture, history and diversity; and smash stereotypes and challenge misconceptions about the immigrant experience.

Highlights of the evening in London, Bricklane on the 13th November, Friday (East Gallery and 93 Feet East) include a sculpture installation by Rosemary Shawyer;  photography by Miglė Bačkovaitė, Deivydas Sutkaitis and Tomas Urbelionis; “Mission Siberia”, project on the history of deportation of Lithuanians to Siberia; short films from a number of UK and Lithuanian filmmakers; and afterparty with Fftang Fftang DJ Huskiii.

Culture Jam in Birmingham on the 14th of November, Saturday, will take centre stage at Moor Street Station and the Volt Warehouse in the heart of Birmingham. Moor Street Station will play host to the unveiling of a stunning photography exhibition featuring the work of Lithuanian born artists Rokas Darulis and Indrė Šerpytytė and interior designer Rokas Rupeikis; Birmingham based filmaker and CultureJam programme co-ordinator Sam Groves will present a diverse selection of short documentaries produced by independent filmmakers from across the West Midlands and Lithuania, screenings commence at 5pm. Switching to the industrial surroundings of Digbeth's Volt Warehouse, CultureJam continues into the night with live performances from two incredible bands, Norwegian/Lithuanian cinematic six-piece Rasa Basom and electro folk pioneers Black Diamond Bay.

Culture Jam is happening because of the curiosity and enthusiasm of young creative people and a successful partnership of public and private bodies.  The project is managed by the British Lithuanian Youth Association in partnership with EC-Arts and Chiltern Railways.
