Cloth and culture NOW – the other UK showing in Manchester

17 September – 14 December, 2008. The Whitworth Art Gallery at the University of Manchester shows cloth and culture NOW, the major exhibition which brings together work by leading contemporary textile artists from Estonia, Finland, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania and the UK. Textiles have played an important role in the cultural identities of these countries and the artists featured draw on those histories and traditions to produce inspiring new work.

The exhibition aims to examine textile as both a global language and as a medium that can express a sense of local and regional identity. cloth & culture NOW is accompanied by a beautifully illustrated catalogue.

The exhibiton has been assembled by Professor Lesley Millar, Professor of Textile Culture at the University of the Creative Arts and organized by the Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts at the University of East Anglia, where it was shown from January through to late May. Manchester is the only other UK showing.

Five Lithuanian artists are involved in the exhibition – Egle Bodanienė, Laima Oržekauskienė, Lina Jonikė, Austė Jurgelionytė and Severija Inčirauskaitė. Severija Inčirauskaitė will travel to Manchester in November to talk about her work at a conference related to the exhibition.
