CELEBRATION OF THE START OF THE EU LITHUANIAN PRESIDENCY

On 1st July 2013, the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in the UK held a concert at the historic St John’s Smith Square to mark the start of the Lithuanian EU Presidency.

Milius photoLithuania, first among the Baltic countries took over the EU Presidency, which will continue to the end of 2013.  Driving the time of complex economic reforms, the agenda of the Lithuanian Presidency focuses on strengthening of credible, growing and open Europe.  Financial stability, the banking union, tackling unemployment, creation of new jobs, common energy market and relations with Southern and Eastern neighbours – just some of the main areas of concern during the Presidency.

Milius photoLithuania regained its independence 23 years ago and only 9 years ago the country joined European Union.  „Today is a big day for Lithuania, as we are embarking on a responsible and challenging mission.  For the first time, Lithuania is taking the helm of the European Union. It is a historic occasion for my country“, in her opening speech said Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė, the Ambassador of Lithuania.
