BRITISH-LITHUANIAN SOCIETY ORAGANISES THE TALK WITH PC GARY PETTENGELL

THE BRITISH-LITHUANIAN SOCIETY talk by PC Gary Pettengell of the Norfolk Constabulary Monday 18th June 2007 6.30 pm for 7.00 pm Lithuanian Embassy, 84 Gloucester Place, London W1U 6AU “Welcome to Norfolk” PC Gary Pettengell has served with the Norfolk Constabulary since 1988. In September 2006 he launched the website www.welcometonorfolk.org.uk with the aim of helping people from overseas to settle and work in Norfolk by giving practical advice on such topics as setting up a bank account and finding a GP. This has now developed into multi-lingual website with pages in English, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese and Russian.In April 2007 Gary received the Lithuanian police service’s “Angel Guard” medal for policing excellence, and the “Pride of Lithuania (Personality of the Year) Award”. Gary and wife Sarah traveled to Vilnius for the ceremonies.

 The “Pride of Lithuania Award” is a prestigious television event that takes place each year. Viewers are invited to vote for the winner and Gary was competing against nominees from all walks of life, including doctors and nurses, who have done something exceptional. Prior to the competition Gary was followed around Yarmouth for two weeks by a Lithuanian TV crew, to create an in-depth profile shown to the voting viewers.

Gary started learning the Lithuanian language some 3 years ago, using a phrase book and CD set, when about 50 Lithuanian migrants arrived in Yarmouth.
