British film actor Dexter Fletcher became a Lithuanian citizen
On the 26th of May Dexter Fletcher, the British actor and director, was officially sworn in and became a Lithuanian citizen.
"This opportunity crowns my quarter-century journey and at the same time marks a new phase in which I can work harder to defend the interests of Lithuanian cinematographers and Lithuanian artists in the world,” said Fletcher.
On the 20th of May, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda granted Fletcher the Lithuanian citizenship on a recommendation from the Citizenship Commission and in recognition of his merits for the country.
Fletcher has been deeply involved in Lithuania's cultural life, including through his close collaboration with local film festivals, the national symphony orchestra and charity initiatives.
Fletcher began his career at the age of 6 and continued to work in the industry on screen for the next four decades, appearing on-screen alongside greats Al Pacino, Anthony Hopkins, Robert de Niro, Helen Mirren and Liam Neeson to name a few. In 2011 Fletcher made his directorial debut with Wild Bill, which he co-wrote, and earned him a BAFTA nomination for Outstanding Debut. Following this Fletcher directed Sunshine on Leith and Eddie, Eagle and Bohemian Rhapsody. Fletcher’s latest film Rocketman, had its world premiere at Cannes Film Festival, received numerous nominations, including a BAFTA nomination for Outstanding British Film, Golden Globe nomination for Best Film (musical or Comedy) and an Academy Award for Best Achievement in Music.
