Baltic way commemorated in London
August 23, 2015. Representatives of the Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian communities in London gatherted at Marble Arch to commemorate the 26th anniversary of the Baltic way. In late summer of 1989 people of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia joined their hands to form a human chain spanning over 600 km across Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn. In this peaceful political demonstration they condemned the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact (1939) between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany and demanded freedom for the Baltic States.
Today‘s commemoration in London included a family photo in the background of the flying flags of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. The participants also wore yellow ribbons to express solidarity with illegally abducted Estonian security official Eston Kohver whom Russian authorities sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment in a show trial last week.
“The Baltic way reminds us that there is no obstacle too great to overcome when your cause is right. Today we demand freedom for Eston Kohver, the Baltic States remain united as ever”, the Lithuanian Ambassador Asta Skaisgirytė said.
