Baltic Symposium 2010: Economics, Security, Culture

30 April, 2010. The Baltic Symposium 2010 is organized for the fifth time and is one of the major academic platforms in the UK to promote studies of the region, to discuss the most burning topics related to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, and to prompt general interest in the Baltic countries. The focus of the symposium this year will be economics - restoring GDP growth; fostering innovation/R&D; improving cross border infrastructure. One session will be dedicated to security problems – energy security; national and joint responsibility for global stability; questions of dealing with neighbours; main fears and risks. A third thematic session will critically discuss the so called ‘new economy’ – culture, culture as an instigator of urban regeneration; major projects (former and upcoming European capitals of culture in Vilnius, Turku and Riga), and politics of culture in an urban environment. There will also be a session on new research projects on the Baltics by doctoral students at UK universities.

Baltic Symposium is organized every two years by the Baltic Council in Great Britain, in collaboration with UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies and diplomatic missions of the Baltic countries. It is supported by the British Latvian Association, British-Lithuanian Society, Estonian Educational Trust, Estonian House London, Latvian Educational Foundation, Latvian Welfare Fund
