“Baltic Music and Musicologies” – an International Conference in Canterbury
26-28 May, 2011. The conference on the music of the Baltic Sea region, organised by the Department of Music at Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) in association with the Institute of Musical Research (IMR), coincides with and augments the long-established Sounds New Contemporary Music Festival, which is closely affiliated with CCCU. The 2011 festival (20-29 May), titled ‘Baltic+’, focuses on the music of the Baltic region.
Building on the festival theme, the conference provides an overview of the latest scholarly work on music, music-making and musicology in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, as well as Finland, Denmark and Sweden, and brings together scholars, composers and performers with interests in this area.
Some of the conference themes include, but are not limited to, compositional and analytical aspects of individual composers (Arvo Pärt and also Lithuanian classical composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis in particular), repertoires, genres and styles; Baltic opera and Baltic voices; music, politics and identity; traditional and jazz music; and the global influence of Baltic music. The conference includes three lunchtime and three evening concerts, three receptions, and the screening of two films.
The conference will include several Lithuanian sessions: the session on Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (musicologists Gražina Daunoravičienė, Rima Povilionienė and George Kennaway); session on contemporary Lithuanian composers (musicologists Jūratė Katinaitė, Audra Versekėnaitė and Kamilė Rupeikaitė), paper on Lithuanian contemporary opera boom (Beata Baublinskienė) and musicological trends (Girėnas Povilionis and Rimantas Astrauskas).
