Baltic films are screened in Glasgow Film Festival as part of a special programme
With a successful start of 2018, the three Baltic countries continue to celebrate the centenary all over the world. Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are being presented in a special celebratory film programme ‘Pure Baltic’ in the Glasgow Film Festival. The programme also includes the first meeting of the Irish and Baltic cinema industry professionals, where the opportunities and capabilities of the regions will be presented.
The ‘Pure Baltic’ programme showcases four new, diverse and dynamic films. Lithuania is bringing two films – Miracle by Eglė Vertelytė and A Gentle Creature by Sergei Loznitsa. Latvia is coming with Aik Karapetian’s thriller Firstborn, while Estonia is presented by Jaak Kilmi’s action comedy The Dissidents.
More about the Lithuanian films:
The transition from communism to capitalism brings all kinds of unexpected challenges in Miracle, a wry, deadpan tragi-comedy with a strong flavour of Aki Kaurismäki. It is 1992 and Irena (Egle Mikulionyte) is struggling to make a success of her pig farm deep in rural Lithuania. Then Lithuanian-American Bernardas (Vyto Ruginis) arrives in the neighbourhood. A boisterous, blustering fellow in a red tie and baseball cap, he wants to invest in the farm and make it great again. Is he the answer to all her prayers? Will he save her bacon, or is it all too good to be true?
Inspired by Dostoevsky’s short story, In the Fog director Sergei Loznitsa takes us into a lawless Russia where crime is often unpunished. A woman lives alone on the outskirts of a Russian village, when one day, she receives a parcel that she sent to her incarcerated husband marked ‘return to sender’. She decides to travel to Siberia in search of answers. Met by violence, corruption and humiliation, this ‘gentle creature’ pursues a quest for justice. A powerful and hugely ambitious state-of-the-nation fable.
The programme is implemented by the Lithuanian Film Centre and Lithuanian Cultural Attaché in the UK.
We kindly invite you to attend the screenings of ‘Pure Baltic’ that will take place 1-4 of March.
Address: Glasgow Film Theatre, 12 Rose Street, Glasgow, G3 6RB.
